Cincinnati, Ohio boasts of a unique chili recipe that has no equal in the entire nation. The traditional dish is served over a plate of spaghetti, topped with cheese and served with a side order of oyster crackers. My personal favorite is the four way which consists of chili, spaghetti, cheese and onion. The ONLY place you can eat this is at Skyline Chili.

Although the restaurant's chili recipe is a secret, many believe the unique flavor is derived from ingredients such as chocolate, cinnamon, and perhaps some allspice. Others say it is the unique process that makes the difference. But, it is definitely a taste that you won't find in any other chili recipe.

A Little Skyline History

Nicholas Lambrinides arrived in America from Greece and began a family owned business in 1949 located in the Price Hill area of Cincinnati, Ohio. The recipe caught on quickly and he expanded his locations throughout the area. Today the chili can be found at many venues such as Theme Parks, college campuses and sports arenas. It is the official chili of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. You are not a true Cincinnatian until you have eaten a bowl of this wonderful chili!

I have posted a dip recipe below using the special chili sauce. This would be ideal for any tail-gate party or football-TV-watching night. I cannot take credit for the recipe idea as it is one created and posted by the franchise. I can attest that it is a delightfully spicy treat!

A Chili Place Warm to Home & Heart

My husband I were frequent diners at the local Skyline in Cincinnati, Ohio. On average, we ate their at least twice a month, if not more. The retro setting of the diner and the friendly service made the total experience enjoyable. Then came the day when we had to make a move to South Florida where we discovered the cuisine was quite different. Here we dined out on a diverse menu which ranged from Cuban sandwiches, Turkish kabobs to Greek soups, all wonderful and quite enriching for us!

However, as time went by we missed our Midwest chili date night out and began a search for a comparable venue. We tried several restaurant chili dishes in the area for an equal experience, but to no avail. One day we were chatting with a friend about our hunt for a great chili diner and he mentioned that there was a Skyline in Sunrise, Florida. You can only imagine how thrilled we were to discover that there was a Skyline Chili restaurant within an hour’s drive from us.

Our next date night out we headed down to Sunrise. We were rewarded for our efforts as soon as we walked in the door. The wonderful chili smell was heavy in the air and the diner itself was a reminder of what we had left behind. We ordered our favorites and eagerly devoured our meal within minutes! I admit no shame in this fact, because it was like opening presents on Christmas Day.

The restaurant in particular is located just off North University Drive in Sunrise, Florida. It is owned by Jenny Doyle, a Cincinnati native. Jenny moved to South Florida over twenty-eight years ago and opened the local franchise in 1995. The restaurant décor follows the Cincinnati theme, a standard in Skyline diners, and this is so comforting to Midwest folks like us. We found the service excellent, friendly and courteous. We are definitely making this spot a favorite on our date night list.
